Crossed Off the Netflix List

All these shows have thirty minute episodes and are pretty easy to binge watch if you have the time.

Here are the shows, I’ve caught up on:

Grace and Frankie:

When season one was released two years ago, I went through the season pretty fast. At first I was a little hesitant to watch the show because it didn’t seem like something I would be in to, but I like to give most shows a chance and so I watched it. I immediately fell in love with it. All the actors are great and they really do work well together. Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin play Grace and Frankie (in that order) and are perfect counterparts to each other. Grace is a little more “put together” and Frankie is the free loving spirit animal I always wanted to be. Their ex husbands, Sol (Sam Waterson from Law & Order) and Robert (Martin Sheen from well it’s Martin Sheen, you should know who he is) are so adorable together. If you don’t know the premise  of the show the husbands of Grace and Frankie come out as homosexual and in love. So Grace and Frankie move into their family shared beach house together and start off not so much friends and grow to love each other. I actually enjoy watching their children more on screen. Grace and Robert’s daughters are Brianna (June Diane Raphael) and Mallory (Brooklyn Decker), and while you don’t see Mallory that often she has her funny moments. Brianna is my favorite of the two daughters, which I think has a lot to do with the fact that she is almost a perfect mix of Grace and Frankie. Frankie and Sol have two sons, Coyote (Ethan Embry. I have loved Ethan Embry since I was a teen and I squeal anytime I see him in anything.) and Nwabudike aka Bud (Baron Vaughn). They are both hilarious in their own quirky ways. Needless to say the cast work so well together on screen and that is part of why I love this show so much.

For some reason when the second season came out last year, I only watched half of the season. I don’t know what happened or why, I guess I just forgot about it. I wasn’t reminded that I needed to finish the show until the third season was advertised. Oops. So once I finished 13 Reasons Why and I decided it was a perfect time to watch Grace and Frankie. I definitely needed something light hearted. Now I don’t want to go into much of the show because of spoilers and all. I just wanted to say that over the three season watching Grace and Frankie’s relationship just grow stronger is beautiful and hilarious at times. Their story kept me interested the whole time and all I did was smile. If you want to watch a sort of coming of age for some 70 year old ladies, then you should watch this. Or if you like unique family sitcoms, you should watch this. Or if you just need something to watch and don’t care what it is, watch this. I love it and I hope that there’s a season four!

Girlboss:

When I first saw the trailer for Girlboss, I was kind of like, “eh, maybe.” Netflix released it on April 14th and my son and I happened to be sick that day. So there was no cleaning or really true mothering going on. While my son played, napped or watched some weird kid shows on an iPad (like I said I just needed to do nothing,) I watched Girlboss. It’s sad to say that I finished it all in one day. There were only thirteen episodes and they were 30 minutes a piece. So it was very easy to go through the show quickly.

Girlboss is the true-ish story of Sophia Amoruso who started her own clothing website Nasty Gal. She was a young woman who had a hard time keeping a job and was definitely self centered, which she acknowledged, so when she lost another job she decided to sell a vintage jacket on eBay. She succeeds in selling a jacket she paid nine bucks for and she got over $600 for it. So this is when she decided to start selling more vintage clothes, some she would alter and some she sold as is. So the show basically follows her journey from eBay seller to creating her own website. Her friends in the show are entertaining and I kind of liked them more than the main character. Although I will say that the actress Britt Robertson (who I just found out is from Greenville, South Carolina, woot woot) did a great job of playing Sophia Marlowe (character’s name on the show). I just don’t think I cared much for Sophia. The dialogue was good and I found myself laughing a few times. This show is definitely a good simple watch. If you need a filler show, you should watch this. It’s definitely entertaining.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt:

This is another show that I enjoyed the first season so much but when the second season came out I for some reason just stopped watching. I don’t know if it was lack of interest or what, but I just stopped. They just announced this week that the third season was coming out soon and I decided maybe it’s time I finish watching the second season.

I loved the first season so much. I mean the show is created by one of my favorite people in the world, Tina Fey! Of course, I was going I love it. It has the quirkiness of 30 Rock and pretty much anything that Tina Fey does. I love all the characters and the crazy story line. But as I watched the second season, to catch up, I just felt like it wasn’t as good as the first season. I don’t know, maybe it’s just too quirky, which I don’t think that’s possible. I don’t know why I wasn’t into it that much. I still love the show and I love that Tina Fey was in it. Also there was an hilarious appearance by Joshua Jackson (Pacey from Dawson’s Creek, if you are one of those people who don’t know actor’s names and just the characters they play. I know people like that.) Which I will add maybe I loved his appearance because I’m Team Pacey all the way and he points out some important stuff about Pacey and Joey’s relationship to Kimmy Schmidt. Overall this was still an entertaining show and I did still enjoy it, but was just slightly bored with the second season. I’m hoping the third  season is good. If you haven’t watched Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and you need a funny weird show, then you should watch it. If you were never a fan of 30 Rock or Tina Fey’s then don’t watch it.

What I’m watching now on Netflix:

I finally decided to try Bates Motel out. I know I’m way behind the times on that show. I just never really had a desire to watch it until now. I was looking for a weird creepy show with some twist and turns. So I figured I would give Bates Motel a go. When I don’t feel like watching that I’m re-watching Supernatural or Buffy. I’m also in the process of watching the new season of Death in Paradise

What I’m watching now on Hulu:

I’m not really watching much. I’ve been keeping up with the few current shows that I watch, but to be honest there aren’t very many. This year’s television seasons are all just a little “blah. I don’t know what’s up with it but I just don’t care about any of the shows I normally watch. I did decide to try out Lucifer again and I have been re-watching some Golden Girls’ and Wings’ episodes every now and then.

What I’m watching now on Amazon Video Prime:

I decided a while back to re-watch Doctor Who from the 9th doctor and on. I’ve been doing this probably since Christmas and I just sporadically watch it. If you know the show, then I will tell you that I’m on Clara’s first season with the Doctor.  I’m trying to get back into it because I’ve never watched any of Peter Capaldi’s Doctor Who and I would like to.

Side Note: It may seem like I watch a lot of shows, but the shows mentioned above are ones that I watch during spare moments throughout the day and night, mainly at night. I go weeks sometimes not watching some of these shows. It’s all sporadic. I don’t want people to think I sit around all day watching TV.

  1. That’s so funny! Last week I decided to check out Girlboss, but then my daughter came into the room to watch tv with me, so I changed it to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. My Mom had been telling me to watch it since last year and that it was pretty funny. I got caught up in chores so I couldn’t pay much attention to it, but my daughter ended up binge watching the show for the rest of the day.

Have you watched Jane The Virgin? I’m usually into dark, gritty, violent stuff with a touch of humor but I got the recommendation to watch Jane The Virgin (from my Mom again) and I pretty much devoured that show. The first couple seasons are on Netflix.

    1. I’m all about some dark and gritty shows but then sometimes it’s all too much for me and I need something light and funny. Honestly I like pretty much any genre of show. I have watched some of Jane the Virgin. I like the show but I never feel the desire to watch it. Once I hit play on it, I’ll go through numerous episodes but then the next day I won’t think to watch it. I need to finish it.

      1. Off the top of my head, my favorite shows I’ve watched on Netflix are, Peaky Blinders, Sons of Anarchy and The OA. I think Vikings, The Walking Dead and Spartacus are on their too, but I watched those on tv.

      2. I have yet to watch Peaky Blinders, I keep meaning to. I never finished Sons, the ending of the series was ruined for me, so just never finished it. It was a good show though. I’ve only watched one episode of The OA, it’s definitely interesting. I love Vikings but I’m so behind on it, it’s ridiculous. I stopped watching Walking Dead this season, it just all got to be too repetitive and too much emotionally for me. I got tired of them always having to battle some other group of humans. I haven’t watched Spartacus but my husband said it was good. Don’t know if you have HBO or watched these but Westworld is pretty crazy and The Leftovers is out there. Those are two I’m currently trying to get caught up on, as well as Bates Motel.

      3. The OA definitely picks up after the first episode. If you have time, watch the next episode and tell me what you think. I’m up to date on Vikings, but I don’t want to spoil it for you, I’m just sad about the last season I watched. Ragnar was my favorite character on tv for the longest time and I miss Athlestan’s face. I agree with you about The Walking Dead, this season was the worst!! The trash people were just… UGH; but I’ve been watching it for so long, I feel like I have to keep watching it for the sake of watching it. Spartacus is really good (another recommendation from my mom) but I miss Andy Whitfield and was said when he passed away in the middle of the series. Westworld was pretty good and I watch The Leftovers too. My husband gave up on it after the first season, but I’m all caught up. Black Sails is another all time favorite that just wrapped up completely and I can’t wait for Ray Donovan to start back up.
